We are thrilled to announce a series of co-curricular events as part of our ongoing effort to provide a well-rounded education to our first-year students. These events are a key component of our Global Foundation Character and Leadership course and are designed to enrich our students' academic experience by offering them a diverse range of topics to explore outside of the classroom.

As members of the academic community, we are keen to showcase the exceptional programs that Bryant University has to offer, particularly in accounting, finance, and entrepreneurship. These co-curricular events provide an excellent platform to introduce our students to the breadth and depth of Bryant's academic offerings and to foster a deeper sense of belonging within our community.

Our first session of the semester focused on American culture and was delivered by our esteemed Dean, Corey Larsen. The session, titled "Understanding American Culture," explored American culture through the lens of language and behaviors.

In addition to exploring the nuances of American cultural norms, Dean Larsen's presentation also delved into the intriguing realm of numbers and small talk. For example, Dean Larsen pointed out that, unlike in China, where numbers six through ten are expressed through certain hand gestures, Americans express numbers without the use of accompanying gestures after counting up to five. This small but significant difference may prove to be a useful insight for those seeking to navigate cultural differences between China and America, and emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness in cross-cultural communication.

Moreover, Dean Larsen’s presentation highlighted the fascinating contrasts between Chinese and American small talk conventions. While in China it is common to ask someone if they have had lunch, as a means of making polite conversation, Americans may interpret such a question as an invitation to have lunch together. This subtle distinction underscores the importance of recognizing and understanding the intricacies of cultural differences in order to communicate effectively across cultures. It also highlights the valuable role that cross-cultural co-curricular activities play in promoting cultural understanding and global citizenship among students.

Overall, the co-curricular events offer a unique and valuable opportunity for our students to engage in intellectual and cultural exploration, and we look forward to continuing to offer a diverse range of topics throughout the semester. We are grateful for the participation of our esteemed Bryant Zhuhai faculty and staff members, whose expertise and insights enrich the learning experiences of our students.
