On Friday, September 3, 2021 the Bryant Zhuhai first-year students were honored to hear from Dr. Vinita Gaikwad as the keynote speaker for the Bryant ZhELI Conference Day. Dr. Gaikwad is a new English professor at Bryant Zhuhai who brings her many years of experience to enrich the learning of our first-year students.
The title of Dr. Vinita’s speech was The Road Much Traveled, which refers to the long road of life throughout which a person must continue to learn, saying that learning only stops after life is over. In fact, she told a story of ship at sea in which something went wrong and the engines stopped working; the engineers on board could not solve the problem. The ship’s captain made an announcement searching for a passenger who might help. An old man stepped forward to volunteer, but the captain doubted that such an old man would be able to fix his modern ship. In the end, the old man was able to solve the problem with a few simple taps of a hammer in the right place. Amazed and grateful, the captain asked the man to send them a bill for fixing the engines. On the bill, the man listed the following:
Hammer: $1.00
Knowledge: $1,999.00
The moral of the story: you can have all the right tools, but if you don’t have the knowledge for how to use them they will be of no benefit.
Dr. Vinita went on to say that the professors at Bryant Zhuhai are here to help the students gain the knowledge they need so they can know how to use the tools necessary for success in their future careers. She said, your classes here are “not just to give you the scores, but to give you the knowledge.”
Finally, she ended her speech giving the students three words of advice. First, PREPARE for your classes by managing your time well, doing your homework, and following the course syllabus, so you can face all the challenges you will meet, both good and bad. Second, PARTICIPATE in your classes by being actively engaged, asking and responding to questions. Make sure your mind and body are both present in class. Third, PERSEVERE, which means to be patient, work hard, and not give up. She warned them that things will not always go smoothly, so they will need to have the perseverance to keep going even through the hard times.
Many students asked Dr. Vinita questions about how to make good choices for their career, how they know if they are on the right path, and how to have patience when they want instant results. Their questions show that they are concerned about starting their new life as university students as they think about which paths they will choose to reach their goals.
As Dr. Gaikwad said, all of us here at Bryant Zhuhai are here to help, and we are just as excited as they are to start traveling this road together!
